How to Do a Life Audit + Why It’s Important
Whether you’re feeling stuck in a rut, looking to make a significant change, or want to take stock of where you’re at now, a life audit can help you identify what’s working in your life right now, what’s not and what changes you want to make moving forward.
I conducted my first life audit at the beginning of 2021 and found it very eye-opening. It was part of a defining moment for me that made me realize that my life had become unbalanced, with the majority of my time and energy going toward work at the expense of other priorities.
It’s so easy to live on autopilot without considering how your daily actions and routines impact your life as a whole, which is why I think this exercise is so beneficial for finding success in creating a life you love.
Now that you know why performing a life audit is important keep reading to learn how to do it!
How to Get Started:
All you need to get started is some distraction-free time to think, a place to write down your thoughts, and a time frame you want to audit.
I like collecting my thoughts in a journal and transferring them to a digital form I can refer to and reflect on after completing it. But you can record your thoughts in any manner that’s easiest for you.
Questions to Consider When Conducting an Audit of Your Life:
Below I’ve included some questions for multiple areas of life for you to consider.
Overall Wellness:
- Do you feel content with your life, or do you think something is missing?
- What day-to-day activities or things have been bringing you the most joy?
- Are there changes you could make to increase your overall happiness and well-being?
Relationships:
- How do you feel about your relationships?
- Which relationships bring you joy and align with your goals and values? Which relationships are doing the opposite?
- Are there relationships you should invest more time and effort in?
- Are there relationships you should let go of?
Career:
- Are you content with your job, or is it time to consider a change?
- Do you feel fulfilled by your work? If not, could you be content finding fulfillment outside of your career?
- Are you happy with the amount of time you spend working versus the amount of time you have for leisure, hobbies, and socializing?
Finances:
- How do you feel about your current financial situation?
- Are you living within your means or struggling to make ends meet?
- Are there changes you could make to improve your financial situation?
Goals & Growth:
- What do you want to achieve in the short-term and long-term, and how do those goals align with your values?
- Have you been learning and growing or stuck in old habits and patterns?
- Are there areas where you could challenge yourself to get out of your comfort zone to keep learning and growing?
By taking the time to reflect on these questions and honestly assess where you’re at in each area of your life, you can gain valuable insights into what’s working in your life, what’s not working, and what changes you might want to make to live a happier, more fulfilling life.
